Yolk sac

A membranous structure outside of the embryo that serves as an early site for the formation of blood. The yolk sac is connected to the developing midgut (intestine) through a channel called the vitelline or omphalomesenteric duct.

The yolk sac can usually be seen on transvaginal ultrasound by approximately 5 weeks’ gestation.
